is that a black bear or black panda bear?

I suppose neither...it's a Japanese mascot called "Kumamon" that represents an area of Japan called Kumamoto.  I was there a couple of months ago and he was plastered all over Japan!  http://blogs.wsj.com/japanrealtime/2012/12/26/the-life-and-times-of-japans-mascots/

Looks really beautiful, Tim. Interesting what you said about trimming and turning from the midpoint, as that's often what I find myself doing, for better or worse. Can't wait to see your new board out at 'The Spot.' I imagine it would feel right at home there.

Sweet-Ass board, Tim. Can't wait to see you riding it at the next good swell...

PS> Just got back from Mexico. Might need your 'professional service' to sue the TSA for making us miss our connecting flight from Dallas to Jax.  ;D

Hey JD..Glad you and Deb are back safe and sound from south of the border!! Looks like you caught some GOOD SURF!!.  Ben and I went to El Norte today and much to our delight found the break is back....thus, my ongoing comments below regarding the "new JP SURF Pro"....

Was able to get out in the water 3 of the last four days. The first two days were in clean 1-2 foot surf. Frankly, too small for the JP to shine. It's not that it rides badly in small, mushy waves....but just not enough juice to allow the board to show its potential....Felt like I was working to keep my speed up a lot of the time. (as we all know, speed it the key!!).  Also felt limited as the waves were much better suited for a board that would allow you to noseride and cruise through the flat sections. Clearly on small days like that my All Around board will be the better option...

Today was a different story...Waves a little bigger...2-3+ feet..good shape, light winds...and great conditions. With just the little bit more power the board shined again....fast down the line speed, rail to rail transitions.....and it felt very lively!!  With each session I get more and more comfortable with what it will do! Can't wait to get it in some "real" surf...head high or bigger... I have a suspicion those days are going to be very special....Tim

Killer new board Tim! Hurricane swells coming up at the shoals should be amazing on that board. It will be easy spotting you in the water with that bright orange paint job! See ya in the water soon.

Ps. Anyone going to the st. Augustine contest tomorrow?

Does the new JP board have a stringer?
Taller than most, shorter than others.

jd

The JPs have no stringer.  Neither the wood nor the PRO carbon/pvc construction.

Does you board have any toe?  or fins are set straight?  Very nice board.

Punasurf, The fins are set up "straight"....interesting design theory. Before I bought the board I found a video on the internet that discusses it. It can be found if you google "you tube JP Australia fins"....maybe someone will know how to attach it here....

My first few waves I noticed that the fins seemed to "bite" a little differently. Now that I've riden the board more I'm finding the fins provide a "smoother" flow during transitions and as I mentioned the board feels very fast.....Tim

PS...from what I have now heard it seems the JP Pro models are not carbon construction. Instead they are some type of proprietary sandwich construction. There is not a lot of information about this on the their website and perhaps someone from JP can provide more....

Piros on the JP fins
It's been posted before... but this thread is a good place to re-visit it

Good to hear your updates on the JP Surf... keep them coming

I guess Piros (the guy on Seabreeze and in the fin video who said they are not carbon) might know better than us if whether the boards are carbon construction, but I emailed the company and asked them about the carbon layup on the boards whether they were just carbon/fiberglass or if they included a PVC construction with the carbon layup.  Their response back was that they included PVC.

The boards are comparable in weight to the carbon Starboards and the construction is probably comparable and are probably made in the same factory.   The bottom of your board looks like it has that "brushed carbon" look to it.  Also the Pro construction boards are priced like carbon.  Retail is around $2000, Exocet's carbons are $2000 and Starboards I think are a little more?????

Interested at the longevity/breakability of construction like this.

I'd imagine durability is on par with Starboard's carbon boards.  In simple terms, it looks like its a Tuflite board with a layer of carbon substituted for one of the layers of glass in the sandwich.  How durable that it versus a hand glassed over EPS with a wood stringer, I have no idea?  More resistant to dings though.  I know there is a guy who surfs big Ocean Beach in SF and Mavs and likes the Tuflite CI M-13 as one of his boards.

Eva the Boardlady might be able to provide some insight.  I know she has written on her website that she prefers this tech to traditional glassing methods especially when EPS is involved.

JP said they've never had one of the boards snapped, not that that means anything.  Most of the guys on the Seabreeze forum say these PRO edition JP boards can take a beating and are happy with the durability.

Do your JP boards have fins with no cant or toe like the one in the video? And if so, how do you like that?
