Title: the shape of things to come
Post by: OUTSIDEWAVE on February 15, 2012, 12:59:55 PM
At least for me anyway.  Here is how the board is shaping up. I am working on a  big  board with performance  as a   goal and surfability and stability. Sounds like they should be mutually exclusive.  but maybe not I borrowed a lot of the design element form  my experience on boards I have owned and ridden so  I wish to acknowledge, Ben Aipa for his  stinger  designs, Steve Boehne bottom shape and cluster orientation (infiniti)   Dana point,  Joe Blair fin placement and width  and to Dave Daum who has been patient and helped me to see things I did not understand. and put elements of these fine shaper together. so  here is a series of photos form the first part of the session.  It starts with a door like blank and ends up a thing of sweet lines and curves

Whoops forgot to attach files before I hit post.

The board is cut  from the square blank using  a hot wire cutting tool. instead of a saw then once the shape is rough cut the sides are routed with a custom made tool  so there is consistency tot he rail shape then  hand trimming and sanding .  This was a far as we got the first day. Next we will cut in stepped rails, and fine tune. The board has no concave  but v all the way through it form about 1/16 under the nose to 1/8 through the paddle area and  form the wings back 3/8ths to 1/2.  It will be all carbon when it is done. and it willbe about 10'3" x 34.5" x 5.25" and should weigh in the 20 lb range. with a volume of about 2o5 liters..

From what you've shown, the board is turning out nicely.  As you progress, could you include a rear view of the tail bottom.  It looks like you're shaping something I'd love to try out.  I'll be following your progress and testing closely.  Thanks for bringing us along for the ride.

I'm thinking on a wider board, the V bottom will help you go rail to rail faster. It should help the board track better when paddling distance. I like the concept... Let us know how it works.

So today I got to see the board and worked out the fin placement.  It is just rough glassed and like my very own baby ( Kids) I took allkinds of pictures  so here are a few.

Wow. That board looks really nice. It has a really nice outline and balance to the board. With all that v in the tail it seems like it should surf well. My boards have a lot of v too and it works well for me. I was suprised that the board was that big when i saw the dims. Looked much smaller in the pics probably because it looks very performance oriented. U must be a big guy. I was stoked for u that the board can be so light at twenty pounds with the carbon. Same weight as my custom 9'6. Awesome. Best wishes with ur new board. Aloha.

Hey Wave... sorry I'm so slow responding to this post... I don't check the Shape thread much.
Looks like a nice board... one of my all time favorite boards was an Aipa Sting back in the 70's.
I have been thinking that I might try reducing the tail on a noserider, longboard style SUP. I like to stay on the nose without the fins breaking free and that sting will probably help on a wide board.
Is Dave Daum (or Kings) shaping your board or are you doing it?

If you really get that weight from a large volume board, good work!

Fins? 3,4,5?

Full review when thoroughly tested please.

I'm reasonably sure you just shaped my dream board...or damn close to it.  Beautiful.

Dave Daum   shaped it , I watched it is being vacuum bagged now and should be done it 2 weeks   I will report on then in the  mean time  . I can't wait / it looks better in real life.   so I  have to choose a color for the deck I am leaning toward  white or blue.    grey deck pad  black in the bottom and the rails. If you  want to get a board shaped Dave is the guy the carbon  board is less that most other regular boards.

That's great... Dave is as stoked as we are and you can tell he absolutely loves his product.

He sent me a nice CAD of a Crossover. I did not go that route, but I am keeping him in mind to make me a "Longboard" SUP.
His riders really surf his boards with a flowing longboard style mixed in with a High performance edge... different...and to me...more appealing than the rip/slash school.

All that means is... his design theory creates boards that are ridden with snappy turns mixed with classic style.... Dave is a great choice to build you an AWESOME board.

I'd love to see the finished product... post more pics when done.

PS... Black... whew... better not leave it upside down on your racks' !

What is ballpark $$ for a similarly sized board in carbon from DD?

Your board looks awesome!  How much nose rocker is there? Hard to tell from the pics.
Do you surf beachbreaks? reefs?

here it is Right now I am using 2 turbo tunnels for fins and will switch them out later, I put  regular boxes in  instead of the   fcs or futures so I can shape and trade out fins.  Tomorrow surf

Hey Outside
Finished product look SO nice!
So.... how is it?
Haven't seen much about it since delivery.
I am real eager to here how the light weight and nice "V" loosen up a board of those dimensions & volume.
I hope you love it and just don't have time to post.

The only thing I would absolutely do to that board is add a good Stomp pad and arch bar at the tail.

If you ever want to sell it.... ;)

I do love it it surfs very well and it is loose in the turns still playing with fins and am about to set it  as a quad. Since I got the board  haven't had any time to surf  except for when it was really junky trashy  and confused. ironically  I got some decent waves  can't wait for  a glassyday.
