What is the advantage of using a "nubster" fin?

mrbig

On a short board with quads; helps keep the sucker going straight when paddling and no speed wobbles in juicier waves..Tiny is better IMO..

I'm not talented enough to comment unless it's a huge change and a nubster wasn't that big of one for me.

Some wide tail quads get slidey in bigger and \or hollower surf. The nub really helps....

I had nubsters on two boards. I couldn't tell if it made a difference.  I used them for a year and eventually took them off. I understand the theory but there doesn't seem to be any conclusive proof that it has much if any positive affect. It may just be a gimmick to fill the empty fin slot and sell more fins.

You get a wide enough tail and and in certain conditions and they help a lot

When I ordered my Hammer 8'11" quad plus 1; which was starting to be built for me on June 8th, I ordered it with one 2.25" nubster fin (plus 5 other fins). I figured, "Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it".

I hope soon to test the nubster out when my Hammer arrives.

+1 supsurf -TW. A short wide tail board in juicier hollow conditions performs very differently with and without the nubster.

I surf in ME, NH, RI, and MA. Makes a significant difference on my shortest wide tailed boards on Cape Cod. First started riding quads in the eighties on a Schroff. Waves at places such as Long Sands, First Beach, or Straws not so much!

That was four years ago. Does he still use one? Do any pros use nubsters today?

I'm not saying it doesn't work. I just don't know. I'm still open to the idea. I might try one on the Flow at some point. They don't cost much.

What the Pros use has no bearing on what works for us. They don't ride boards for the most part that require a Nub. Again, they're for certain boards in certain conditions, not for just sticking one in the rear plugs in any ol' board in any ol' conditions and expecting dramatic differences
